You have to admit, Megatron as gotten the short end of the stick in all of the Transformers movies. After being resurected from his frozen tomb, he got his Deception tail kicked and dumped in the Laurentian Abyss in the first movie, he is scrapped together with random parts in the 2nd movie, and then contracts some machine eating virus in the 3rd movie.
That said, Andy Hibbs has captured the look and feel of the Leader of the Decepticons with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Megatron complete with his little lackey! Andy has created an Action Masters version, meaning that the figure does not transform but what is lost in the inability to convert the figure is definitely made up in the ingenuity and creativity of the custom. Using a combination of ROTF Leader Prime and ROTF Leader Megatron parts as well as many scratch built parts using styrene, this figure is movie accurate and amazing! If you look real closely, you will see Igor, Megatron’s twisted little wretch, whoIgor hung around at Megatron’s Decepticon refugee camp in Africa, where he was weird and crazy, eating the occasional minerals that Megatron gathered and brought back to him and the hatchlings. No detail was left out and he even captured the detail in Megatron’s head where it seemed to be disintegrating right before your eyes. The minibot from the 1980′s we have known to grow and love has turned into a biggiebot thanks for FrogDNA and his Custom G1 Transformers Sea Spray figure. Recreating the classic blue and gold vehicle in a grand scale, the head sculpt is brand new, which makes him look like his classic character but with a beefier body. As he explains, “I used matt enamels to get that cartoony look and several screen shots from the cartoon to match the colors and details. I added several shades of a custom blue and yellow, for a deeper look, but keeping the G1 style. Leader Class Shockwave Custom Transformers DOTM Figure
Combining forces to create this Custom Leader Class Transformers Shockwave DOTM figure, jacerc130 and Encline Designs display their unique talents. Kitbashing and sculpting various parts of the this figure, jacerc130 has transformed one of the iconic figures in the Transformers universe into a towering giant. One of my favorite parts of this custom is the large gun, which seems to have tentacles growing into it. This gives the gun a living breathing persona to it, which makes you wonder if it has a mind of its own. Topping the figure off with Shockwave’s patented single eye and purple look, this figure possesses both the updated look from the movies as well as the classic feel of the 80′s classic. To commemorate the space shuttle Enterprise’s ride on top of a modified Boeing 747, I felt it was fitting to feature one of the coolest shuttle Transformers from 80′s. Maintaining all 6 original modes (shuttle, tank, transport shuttle, lion, bird, and griffon), GetRightRobot (GRR) has created a masterpiece with his Custom Transformers Masterpiece Sky Lynx figure. This custom is a marvel in both design, form, and function. Adding 6 LED lights to the figure gives it an added dimension while the colors cast a magnificent array of custom mixed colors of flat white, Ferrari red, and brilliant blue. The scale is quite massive as well and putting regular sized Transformers next to Sky Lynx really highlights the difference. Using the Mighty Hercules version of the classic combiners, TB Productions has created a very cool rusted, metallic weathered Custom Transformers Devastator G1 combiner. Custom painted with different shades of green which reflect differently under different lighting, TB has captured the classic feel of Devastator with a rough and raw look. “Unyielding resolve has no conqueror.” Sculpt-Bot, creator of one of my favorite Custom Steampunk Jetfire figure, has scratch built one of the biggest Autobots with his Custom Actionmasters G1 Omega Supreme! Taking his custom handle seriously, he has taken styrene and “sculpted” 95% of this figure into a non transformable Actionmaster. Let’s read more about it from Sculpt-Bot himself:
“He has 3 independent LEDs, one for each arm, and one in the head that lights the eyes, and the turret on the back of his head. All of the LEDs have a seperate battery compartment, so they can be changed if they run out. The canopy opens to reveal his face, and rotates backwards for a more streamlined look. He stands 2 feet tall at the tip of his wings, and is extremely poseable”
Using styrene gives the artist tremendous flexibility to create accurate renditions of figures from the past and looking at the G1 cartoon and Sculpt-Bot’s Omega Supreme figure, he has created a two foot tall amazing sculpture of this massive defense base in robot mode. Ok…so there is something really cool about seeing the charred head of Unicron at the feet of MacrossFA-19′s Custom Transformers Classics Galvatron figure. As we know from the Transformers movie, Rodimus rips the matrix of leadership from Galvatron’s neck while Unicron explodes and his head floats off into space. Creating a custom “Triumph of Galvatron” figure stand, MacrossFA-19 presents an alternate universe where Galvatron is the sole survivor, standing over the obliterated carcass of Unicron. Adding articulation to the neck, giving the figure articulated hands, and scratch building the arm cannon really brings to the life the G1 look and feel we saw on the silver screen back in 1986. This custom ranks up there with one of the coolest looking dioramas I have seen. It just goes to show you that brilliance can come from the right pieces!
“Originally a piece intended for my personal collection, it is now available on eBay. Burnimus Prime is a repaint of both the Classics/Universe RTS Rodimus action figure as well as the Fans Project TFX-04 Protector. The original hands have been replaced by 1/100 Gundam hands. His metal applications were made using Chrome for a nice metallic high shine finish. His armory includes the factory issued missile launcher as well as 2 additional weapons: A chrome plated Master Blade, A swap-in Long Range Ion Rifle Barrel, Magnetic connections for handles on both weapons.”
For a character called Burnimus, I thought that the figure would take on more of a flaming or scorching scheme but the figure looks amazing in the ice blue that engulfs it. Replacing the hands with fists from the Gundam universe allows the figure to hold the killer weapons that were designed for it. The figure also looks great in vehicle mode as well!
Building upon the little known fact that Skywarp can warp to and from places in the blink of an eye, Wilestbilame brings us his version of this seeker jet bending space and time with his Custom Transformers Masterpiece Midwarp Skywarp figure. Inspired by the customizer Frenzy.Rumble, this figure was created using the clear masterpiece mold while adding his own personal touch to the figure by painting the figure in an electric blue. It is this technique that gives the figure the illusion that it is ripping through worlds faster than the speed of light. To hear more about this figure, let’s read more from Wilestbilame himself:
“Skywarp has always been an iconic transformer to me, while he retains the exact same appearance as starscream and thundercracker, it is the fact that he was given a unique personality and abilities that really made him a seeker all his own, amongst this was the very little known fact that skywarp has the ability to “warp” between spaces in the blink of an eye, giving him a strategic advantage in battle, if only he knew what to do with it! LOL, well keeping this notion in mind and inspired by a prior custom piece made by FR, I created this skywarp using the clear masterpiece mold, I took advantage of the clear areas while solidifying others in a way not just depicting him being in the middle of manifesting his warping ability but also in a more dynamic aspect, as if he were ripping through the fabric of space and time itself!! for this he was custom painted with the highest quality automotive grade lacquer paint available, his warping ray was Handpainted with several shades of blue to achieve a truly awesome electrical effect between his solid to clear areas for a more believable transition.”
The overall electricity effect is what attracted me to this figure. The blending of the clear pieces along with the crackling electric blue ripples throughout the figure complete the look and transformation of a normal looking Masterpiece Skywarp figure into this amazing Custom Transformers Masterpiece Midwarp Skywarp figure.
The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine where an explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. It is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster). Scottheking has incorporated this event as a diorama with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Shockwave figure like the movie did! With an awesome paint job and a custom cast head, this figure looks like it is right out of the movie, especially when it is posed in the diorama. The diorama was cast from scratch, giving it a realistic effect as Shockwave blasted through it. Going for the most cartoon accurate representation of the planet gobbling planet (I guess that would make Unicron a cannibal), FrogDNA has created this amazing Custom Transformers Cartoon Style Unicron figure. If you remember back to the cartoon, Unicron’s colors are very basic given the large representation of grays and oranges, which FrogDNA has replicated very nicely. He even went as far to mix his own custom orange to get as accurate as possible. Removing the teeth from the chest, which was a suggestion from another customizer, Frenzy.Rumble, it helped to retain the overall look and feel from the cartoon. Using sculpting techniques and creating a custom mouth, this is the most realistic looking figure I have seen in a long time. The figure looks more impressive in planet mode!
Shockwave Leader Class Custom Transformers DOTM Figure
In the Transformers Dark of the Moon movie, the presence of Shockwave was not only seen but was also felt through the rumblings of earth and the twisted metal that made this character one of the coolest Decepticons on the silver screen. Hasbro only gave Shockwave a Voyager Class figure mold but ForgottonForest has given this beast the leader class treatment he deserves with his Custom Transformers DOTM Leader Class Shockwave figure. Let’s read how ForgettenForest made this great figure:
“This custom made Leader Class dark of the moon Shockwave stands at an impressive 11.5 inches tall and is designed to fit perfectly with all other leader class figures. He has been scratch built to be as acurate to the Josh Nizzi concept art and official movie CGI renders as possible. i took great care to build this custom with a sense of power and strength to acurately mirror his appearance in the film in addition to ensuring his menacing and evil aspects were also represented. I wanted Shockwave to be in keeping with the beautiful DMK-01 model kit so i really went overboard on the details, with cybertronion tattoos etched into his gun and sword as well as cables and lots of mechanical details that are hidden all over this design. Shockwave is not just a base figure with extra bits glued on, he is absolutely unique as well as being very beefy and heavy.”
I really like many aspects of the design of this figure. The metallic look and feel of the figure is bold, giving Shockwave the menacing feeling he had in the movie. TFMAKER’s Custom Transformers Ultimate Optimus Prime is locked, loaded, and ready for action! Redesigned based on Frenzy.Rumble’s design and using three different Prime figures (Jetwing optimus prime , Ulitmate optimus Prime, and 2007 Leader class Optimus Prime) to complete this project, I would say the whole is greater than the sum of its parts! The paint app techniqued used for the canons and wings give the plastic a metallic look and feel. There are very subtle effects, like adding a carbon like texture to the end of the gun barrels to give it them a freshly fired look! The wing system has that same look (see below).
Isolating the figure by itself reveals just how much effort was put into every detail on Optimus Prime’s frame. The colors on the figure really pop and again give that metallic feel. Leader Class Optimus Prime and Megatron Forrest Battle Dio
One of the pivotal scenes in the Transformers Revenge of the Fallen movie was the epic battle in the forest between the forces of good and evil! Megatron and Optimus Prime were engaged in a fierce entanglement and Encline Designs has captured the moment where the great leader of the Autobots lost his spark with his Custom Leader Class Megatron and Optimus Prime diorama. Encline Designs is at the top of my list as one of the best customizers out there and his diorama really captures the somber mood and climax of Optimus Prime as he clings to life’s last moments before he goes dark. It looks like this dio might have been a commission piece that someone is selling so lucky for you!
Looks like Wilestbilame’s Custom Transformers Masterpiece Starscream figure flew too close to the sun and with a temperature of 15.7 million kelvin that type of heat is sure to do some damage to your system! The first time I saw this type of 3D effect on a repainted and custom Starscream was on Frenzy Rumble’s version that he made a little over one year ago. The melted effect that is applied to the wings gives Sunstorm his personality and helps to achieve a really cool 3D effect that not many customizers are doing. He also changed up the shape of the wing, which I will let him tell you about:
“Sunstorm was also heavily modified his wings into a new batwing like shape to give him a more menacing look and his side fins were permanently attached to his now modified hips for a better look that sets him apart from his seeker brethrenhe was detailed by hand to bring out the detail on panel lines in his body and circuitry details and was also applied with a subtle flame camo on his body that might not be so apparent in the pictures,then again it wouldn’t be camo if it wasn’t subtle! lol.”
When I first saw Andy Hibbs’ Custom Transformers 1:16 Scale Megatron Tanker Truck replica, I thought I was looking at the real deal from the Transformers Dark of the Moon movie. This is a very different Transformers custom than people may be used to as the figure does not change into robot mode but the extreme amount of detail, raw material, blood, sweat, and time that was put into this 1:16 scale makes up for it. This is the best replica of the Tanker Truck I have seen to date. Spending 7 weeks working on this custom, the detail that was put into every inch of this replica really shines through when you when you look closely at the vehicle:
The front grill, with the protruding spikes, the chain, and the grill bring out the realism of the piece
The tanker was scratch built and looks impeccable with the weathering technique that was used
The rusting technique makes it look like the vehicle did in the movie where Megatron was literally falling apart and melting away
Combining efforts from two other customers, Wilestbilame makes his childhood dream of creating a Dinobot a reality with his Custom Transformers G1 Cartoon Style Masterpiece Swoop figure. Using a custom cast kit from Sculpbot, hands designed by Fakebuster, and the ingenuity of Wilestbilame, this Custom Swoop achieved the look and feel that was inspired the G1 cartoon! The shading of the figure sealed the deal for me! Every now and then, customizers provide us with their inspiration for creating these great pieces so let’s see what he has to say:
“Ever since I was a kid I always loved the dinobots, and apart from Grimlock I always had admiration for Swoop the truly awesome pterodactyl Transformer that really knew how to be as savage as his Dinobot leader. Sadly we never got a proper update to this legendary bot nor classics or MP, but thanks to master sculptor and customizer Sculptbot, Swoop has now become an awesome reality!! Utilizing a custom casted kit by Sculptbot I combined it to upgrade another transformer into a full fledged Masterpiece swoop and I figured I would bring him into the masterpiece line with a closer to the cartoon appearance than previous toys done a in the past. He features super articulated individual finger seeker hands(special thanks to Fakebusker for designing them), ball joint head, articulated dino head and jaw, wings fold via swivel for easy transition from dino mode to bot mode and for flapping his wings I guess LOL, embossed autobot symbol on dino head. I painted the sword to look as if it were lit up all the time and heating up, I wanted to bring back the glory days of generation 1 by recreating this masterpiece with his Cartoon colors, one of the things. I always loved about the cartoon and comic was that”shine effect” they were drawn with on their windshields and shading on their bodies, sort of as if the metal and glass had it’s own shine in cartoon style, so I replicated that effect through a modern method known as “cell shading” and panel lining across his body to bring out a true cartoon style adding a more dynamic color scheme far beyond the simple repaint. Swoop was carefully sanded and cleaned prior to painting, after which he was airbrushed with super high quality automotive grade lacquers and slightly detailed with high quality acrylics, and sealed with UV resistant matte finish to preserve his colors for years to come!”
Call them the dynamic duo! From the fascinating, colorful and throbbing city of Bangkok, Thailand to the roaring shores and sun bleached state of California, TB Productions and Xaviercal have teamed up once again to bring you this Supreme Class Custom Transformers Tripticon figure. Working on the custom detailing, Xaviercal added new, detailed arms, extended the legs, added much needed articulation. Adding the Accented with purple, turquoise, gold, silver, and yellow, and his signature shading, TB productions had a great canvas to work with and the finished product looks fantastic. I have said this before but when customizers team up, they can make some really great figures come to life and this Supreme Class Custom Transformers Tripticon figure is another example of putting two great minds together to produce something fans will go nuts over!
Hot off the heals of his Custom Shattered Glass Devastator comes Xaviercal’s TFC Hercules Custom Transformers Devastator in a Generation One color scheme. Using the 3rd Party Transformer as the base for the figure, the classic nature of the G1 yellow-green paint app really shines through. One welcome addition to the color palette is the use of purple on various parts of the individual figures. For example, on Mixmaster’s cement mixer and Bonecrusher’s bulldozer front end. The addition of the color purple help to break of the overbearing green that the typical Devastator radiates. In addition to the awesome paint app, Xaviercal has also created a G1 inspired gun for his Custom Transformers Devastator so head over to eBay to take a peak at this homage one of the greatest combiners!
Call it the trifecta of the post Megatron Transformers universe where Unicron’s spawn’s rose up from the twisted metal from the heated battle of Cybertron. FrogDNA has created custom cartoon G1 versions of Galvatron, Cyclonus, and Scourge, which is a first in his customizing career. One of FrogDNA’s strengths is getting that cartoon look and feel just right. The way that he paints the figures and shades them bring out every detail. Due to the fact that Galvatron was kitbashed and, in his own words, “some kind of Frankenstein,” the alternate mode was sacrificed to make the robot mode as close to the cartoon as possible. I am cool with that given that the finished product looks amazing.
In the G1 Transformers cartoon, it appears that Omega Supreme is the largest Transformer. Decepti-Punk has made this a reality with his Custom Transformers Supreme Class Omega Supreme figure. Standing a towering 20″ tall, this figure is one behemoth of a custom. Not only one, but two Energon Omega Supreme’s and one G1 Omega were used to make this fully transformable figure, which is a feet in an of itself. Usually, when you build figures this tall, some customizers sacrifice the transformability of the figure, usually called an Action Masters, but Decepti-Punk used his skill to create a massive battle station. Keeping with Omega’s G1 color scheme, this figure is one of the best Omega Supreme figure’s I have seen to date.
With the release of the Transformers Prime figures, customizers now have a new canvas and outlet for their creativity. This week, Zildjian focuses his efforts on creating the best Custom Transformers Prime Megatron figure he could! First, the paint style and application are stunning. The carbon scroing look that he gave the figure is lightyears beyond what the toy company’s can mass produce. Here is a close up look at the brush strokes that were used to create this cool effect. If you look at the before shot of the figure (on the right), you will see a very drab and boring color scheme. Contrast that with Zildjian’s Custom Transformers Prime Megatron figure (on the left) and you can see the world of difference. If the paint app wasn’t enough to make you buy this one, he also wired the figure with purple and red LED’s to give the give that extra something special.
The Shattered Glass concept is the mirrored universe where the bad guys are good, the good guys are bad, and everyone has different paint schemes. Xaviercal, using the TFC Toys Hercules set, has added another character to this bizarro world with his Custom Shattered Glass Devestator combiner. The original G1 Devastator had a lovely lime green color scheme. Contrast this with Xaviercal’s red and white paint app with red Decepticon symbols and you have a recipe for some Shattered Glass greatness. The red and white scheme is traditionally an Autobot flavor, which makes this custom work so well. So well, in fact, that it is based off of the Shattered Glass comic version. Customizing is an artwork! Customizers, like JCartwork, pour countless hours into projects hoping to achieve and build products that fans will go crazy over. This Custom Transformers G1 Defensor is a great example how perseverance and determination can transform several off the shelf toys into grand masterpiece of a combiner we knew and loved as kids. The figure stands between 20″ and 21″ tall and has over 20 points of articulation, something the toys from the 80′s were lacking. Sometimes customizers share how much effort goes into thier work so here to tell us about it is JCartwork:
“Its been a while since I have any new kitbashes online to share .Recently I have decided to complete my long waited combiner Defensor which I have been working on for almost a year plus, on and off .Its a very anticipated project which I wanted to complete for a long time. Remember the first Defensor which FR and Ryan Uybengkee did it was really mind blowing experience seeing how talented these guys have injected life to those plastic not to mention other talented kitbashers as well which I have missed . I was really inspired and decided to build mine version of Defensor as well . The progress of making this kitbash is painstaking .I have changed serveral joints inorder to make it strong when combined . Took me alot of time doing research and keep on improving until its fixed . I have used the best quality lacqer ,enamel and acrylic paint ,so it can withstand any weather condition . And I have also created decal to make it more G1 accurate .Its the most time consuming and anticipated project I have ever done.”
One aspect I am impressed by is the construction of the figure and how this figure resembles the vintage Defensor with an updated kick! The old Defensor was too blocky for my tastes (that did not stop me from buying him) and JCartwork has really gone above and beyond with his Custom Transformers G1 Defensor combiner.
Using the unique Xovergen Grand Patriot figure, Captain Cosmic creates a highly detailed G1 version of the Leader of the Autobots with his Custom Transformers Optimus Prime figure. The Grand Patriot cast is a very futuristic or Cybertronian style of the Optimus Prime. It goes without saying but the paint app on this figure blends the right amount of weathering and gloss for a war torn, battle hardened look. In addition to the recoloring of the figure, Captain Cosmic has also cast some additional weapons and heads that make this figure even better. Adding Battle Blades that fit into the fuel tanks pay homage to Prime’s onscreen movie styling while creating multiple heads adds to the display factor of the figure. In order to ease the pain of swapping heads, they come packed with magnets so you can easily interchange the heads. Standing at an impressive 15″ tall, TB-Production & XavierCal team up to give you this Metroplex Custom G1 Transformers Supreme Class figure. I love when customizers put their heads together because you are guaranteed a superb figure when it is all said and done. The construction of the figure was done by Xaviercal and he has done a fantastic job at placing articulation where needed and replicating and scaling the large parts needed to pull off a Metroplex custom. The arms and mid torso are my favorite parts of this custom. TB-Productions put on the finishing touches to this great piece by applying multiple shades of white and gray overall and black and gray to achieve a steel like effect. Metroplex Custom G1 Transformers Supreme Class Figure
Reflector was an interesting concept and only available via mail away in 1986. If you were lucky enough to save up for points and a nominal fee, you could get your hot little hands on this G1 great. Colosal Customs has paid homage to this Decepticon spy machine with his Custom G1 Transformers Reflector figures. By combining a G1 color scheme fused by a cartoon look and feel, you get an updated style while retaining the classic nature that made these figures great. The original G1 figures all looked different and this custom makes all of the figures look very similar, which is a great concept! I like the continuity that comes with the figures looking the same as the trio act more like triplets than separate robots. I also like the way that the barrel of the camera can be used as either a spy device or a canon (your imagination may vary). Perceptor was one of those interesting figures from the 80′s. It was not a plane, car, or other cool vehicle. It was a microscope and for some reason, the figure really appealed to me as a child and thanks to Area Nifty-One, he has paid a grand homage to the Autobot scientist with his Custom Transformers Commemorative Titan Class Perceptor figure. Starting off as a Supreme Class Cyberton Metroplex figure, Area Nifty-One received his inspiration from the 25th anniversary re-release of Perceptor. The Metroplex base figure is a fantastic figure to use as the alternate mode looks like a mobile laboratory where the Autobots can analyze any data the Decepticons throw their way. In keeping with the classic nature of the figure, the colors that were used stay true to the original as the reds, blues, and silvers complete the overall look and feel of the figure. I will always have a place in my heart for the combiners of the 80′s. From Devestator to Defensor, the Transformers had the market cornered on a toy line that was a huge hit on television and an even bigger hit on the playground. Nomad Customs has captured this feeling with his Custom Transformers Denfensor combiner and has done it on a much grander scale. Standing a towering 19″ tall, this figure can break down into the five Protectobots. This is how the combiners should have been made many moons ago but thanks to customizers like Nomad, the figures are made bolder, badder, and bigger!
This goes without saying (but I will say it anyway!) that there are differing styles and color pallets depending on the medium which you choose to consume your Transformers addiction. If you are a fan of the G1 television show from the 80′s or if you primarily read comics, you will notice stark differences in the styling and features of your favorite characters. That said, Wilestbilame has taken one of the coolest Masterpiece figures and gave it a comic color makeover with his Custom Transformers G1 Comic Color Masterpiece Grimlock figure. The blue, red, and gold colors are so vibrant, really bringing the comic character to life. I always love a great back story on why customers choose to make the figures they do so here to tell us about it is Wilestbilame himself:
“Ever since I was a kid I always loved Grimlock, especially the Marvel comics version, giving Grimlock a more cold, savage and strategical personality to the character as the true king of the dinobots, so since the style I’ve been using being cartoon style, at times some have dubbed it as more comic inspired than cartoon, I figured it would make sense to bring the comic grimlock into the masterpiece line with a closer to the comics appearance than the MP-08x that came out a few years back, he features one of the coolest gimmicks ever, COLOR CHANGING Blue to Red and Back LED Eyes for both Dino mode and bot mode, with easy access to batteries for easy switching. Special thanks go to fellow Floridian Customizer and Tfw2005 member Big Hank for his masterful LED Work!! I gave him a high contrast cel shading with dark tones of grey, yellow red and of course his comic exclusive blue paint apps, detailed the bolts on his grey areas with a lighter tone of grey for a subtle but welcome contrast and although I kept the light up feature on his arm I painted the sword to look as if it were lit up all the time which dims the light up feature but I think this looks better for the style, I didn’t paint the crown of leadership simply because I like it’s blingin aspect that gives a good contrast to the cartoon look. I wanted to bring back the glory days of generation 1 by recreating this masterpiece with his Comic colors, one of the things I always loved about the cartoon and comic was that”shine effect” they were drawn with on their windshields and shading on their bodies, sort of as if the metal and glass had it’s own shine in cartoon style, so I replicated that effect through a modern method known as “cell shading” and panel lining across his body to bring out a true cartoon style adding a more dynamic color scheme far beyond the simple repaint. Optimus was carefully sanded and cleaned prior to painting, after which he was airbrushed with super high quality automotive grade lacquers and slightly detailed with high quality acrylics, and sealed with UV resistant matte inish to preserve his colors for years to come!”
The first of its kind featured on AFC is GetRightRobot’s Custom G1 Transformers Dinobot 5 Figure Box Set. Fresh for 2012 are the Dinobots reimagined in their G1 colors in a totally unique 5 bot box set. Customizing the Dinobots in their rare earth mode, this set captures the feel of the dinobots in a task force dubed “Dynamic Infiltration of Non-Biological Operations.” In robot form, the figures take on the appearance of the Dinobots but in alternate form, they are hidden in plain site as a force to be recon with. The box art on the set is all original and it is a very cool concept to release a “convention” style exclusive. This set goes above and beyond my expectations and is truly a one of a kind set:
“This set comes in a convention styled, telescopic box that is 20″x10″x5″ and features original artwork. The box is extremely sturdy and has 4 1/2″ soft foam cut to hold each figure. Included in the box are all five Dinobots, Swoop, Snarl, Slag, Sludge and Grimlock in their short lived Earth modes. A comic strip (also original artwork) included with this set tells the story of why the Dinobots adopted Earth modes to begin with. Each figure is painstakingly painted and comes with guns/missile launchers and swords!”

I have always been attracted to Shinobitron’s unique styling and artistic prowess when creating customs. So much, in fact, that I have been writing about his customs for almost 4 years! His latest Custom Transformers Movie G1 Black Zarak figure combines the classic colors with an update movie look and feel. Using the Transformers Movie Scorponok as the base figure, he has created a triple changer as this Zarak can transform into a Robot, Scorpion, and a Cybertronian Osprey Helicopter mode. Shinobitron is always thinking of creative ways to make his figures better and better. My only gripe with the original G1 Black Zarak is that the figure is too chunky and stalky but Shinobitron’s version gives the figure a more royal look and the body is proportionate in all the right places. The use of LED’s are getting more creative as the years go by and this Custom Transformers Nemesis Prime is a nice example of a figure that is both artistically and technically sound. By applying an LED in the sword, the figure has a very cool effect. Using the Maktoys Battle Tanker add on kit, this figure looks like it can open a can of whoopass on any foe. The paint app on the figure is stellar and Wilestbilame’s technique goes way beyond a simple repaint. Recreating the G2 color scheme on this RTS Laser Prime brings back that classic feel with a more updated modern look. Let’s read more about this figure from the source:
“Nemesis Prime, scourge, many names have been given to the infamous evil version of optimus prime, but one thing remains clear, it is one of the freaking coolest concepts ever brought into the transformers lore!! still, when the laser prime debuted into the reveal the shield figure series, I felt that there was still something missing from the aesthetics to truly make an intimidating and menacing rendition of scourge, thank goodness for maketoys battletanker armor!! This third party add-on makes this mold taller, bulkier and even adds a light up sword and a trailer for his truck mode which transforms into a super insane ultimate multi missile exosuit!!! Now we could have a really awesome taller armed to the teeth scourge!!! A first in AFC history, Koof LED has captured my attention and has not even laid a paint brush to his DA 28 Striker Optimus Prime Custom Transformers figure. You read that right, no paint has been applied to this figure! Instead, his talent lies in wiring LED lights all throughout the figure to create the cool effects you see in the photos. Here is a rundown of the LED modifications:

The figure looks pretty intimidating in vehicle mode. LED’s can easily be overdone (especially if you know what you are doing) but Koof LED’s work puts the lights in all of the right places.
Highbrow takes on an entirely different look as Lek uses this P-38 to create a Custom Transformers Sunstorm figure that looks like it is taking to the skies fire! Using florescent paints and applying them to make it look like the vintage World War 2 plane is engulfed in flames, the figure takes on a great look that is a deviation from the usual Sunstorms that cross my path. The flame effects are not overdone, which takes restraint as some tend to go overboard with this kind of technique but the flames are in the right place and are believable. Looking at the figure in color takes on a totally different dimension.
The flames look even better in living color and they appear to be sculpted on as opposed to just painted on. This gives them a 3D effect that looks stellar when the lights are on. I have a soft spot for World War 2 planes and I applaud Lek for thinking outside the box on this one and not just doing a Starscream repaint. Go big or go home! Xaviercal has definatley gone bug with his Custom G1 Masterpiece Transformers Fortress Maximus figure. Standing a gargantuan 2 feet tall, this figure captures the essence of the Generation 1 figure with the updated articulation and scale of the custom designed by a talented individual. There are many feature that have been packed into this great figure, including LED’s and scratch built parts. The hands and sword were designed and built from the ground up. Harkening back to the animal instinct that is deep within all of us, Frenzy.Rumble ventures into the realm of the beast with this unique Custom Transformers Beast Wars Optimus Primal figure. Formerly a commissioned custom, Frenzy.Rumble is making this figure available to anyone who will find a great home for this figure. He has the unique ability to transform mediocre figures into epic creations and this Optimus Primal is no exception. The figure has two very distinct looks and there is no question that Optimus is a living, breathing machine when he is in robot mode. By hand sculpting the fur on the shoulders, head, back, and arms, it gives the illusion of flowing hair, making the alternate version of this figure very believable. After enjoying some rest and relaxation from a nice long vacation, I am back in action and this week I am a sucker for the G1 combiner homages and ThyVipera has created this amazing Custom G1 Transformers Menasor combiner to feast your eyes on! Standing 16″ tall, this Menasor captures the bulky and stalky nature of the original combiner of 80′s but with added articulation, this figure does not suffer from the robotic like poses we were stuck with as kids. In some cases, customers have to sacrifice the ability of the figure to reduce down to the sum of its parts but not in this case! ThyVipera has created a true combiner that represents the classic nature of the Stunticons in true Generation 1 fashion!
The addition of Optimus Prime’s plethora of arsenal in the Transformers Dark of the Moon movie gave Prime the ability to fend off the Decepticons and Sentinal Prime in the battle to save eaeth and JCArtwork has captured this version of Prime in fanatastic detail and scale. This Custom Transformers DOTM Leader Class Ultimate Jetwing Optimus Prime captures the vision that movie portrayed in stunning scale and detail. The colors are so vibrant and they look like how they did on the big screen. In addition to the LED’s that light up in the eyes, JCArtwork has also put LED’s in the weapons as well, giving an energizing effect of powering on. If you are going to buy an Optimus Prime, this one would be the one to own! Combining the best of all Transformers movies into one super scale leader class figure is one of the best homages I have seen thus far to the great leader of the Autobots!
I just finished watching Transformers Dark of the Moon again and this Custom Transformers Ghost Sentinal Prime caught my eye as it is the color scheme is a very unique twist on this figure. When I first saw this figure, it reminded me of of Saruman from the Lord of the Rings in both concept and execution. Saruman, like Sentinal Prime, aimed at gaining power for himself and advocated an alliance with the enemy.
The ghost concept is an interesting one from a storyline perspective as you don’t expect the souls or sparks of the Transformers to live on but the overall execution of this figure is very well done. The glow in the dark Autobot symbol adds an extra touch to the vehicle mode as well as the weapons. Here is an example:
I really like the color scheme in truck mode as it gives the figure a higher level of sophistication than the original paint app.
To tell us more about the overall design of the figure is One2213 himself:
“I give you something you’ve never seen before…Sentinel Prime- Ghost. He has been airbrushed and brush painted to accentuate details. The paint employed is titanium white and black. This is truly a one-off. Self-directed color scheme on Transformer, sword and shield- makes it all the more unique. Forearms modified with cutouts to add definition. Feet detail has been swapped out with an actual metal panel. Addition of black pneumatic hose with metal fittings, can be carefully screwed off when transforming. Glow in the dark letterings on sword and shield. Plus the Transformer insignia is also glow in the dark. This Custom Sentinel Prime can still be transformed to its Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 Fire Truck Mode and vice-versa.”
Released only in Japan, Liokaiser is a unique and highly sought-after combiner and Forgotten Forest has recreated this figure in amazing detail with his Custom Transformers Liokaiser Combiner. Designed with a series of custom scratch built parts, including his hands, which are ball jointed at the wrist and on every finger, giving the figure the fine motor skills it deserves. Scratchbuilt hip and thigh parts and a custom scratch built head round out the amazing features of this classic combiner. He even comes with a cartoon G1 accurate re-creation of his spiked hand held weapon in addition to his main gun, which combines from Killbisons turret and Jarugas missile rack just like the G1 classic. Inspiration the cornerstone of a great custom and Andy Hibbs’ wanted to create a movie version of one of his favorite G1 characters with his Custom Dark of the Moon Double Dealer Powermaster figure. When I first saw this figure, I thought to myself how is he going to pull off making the humanoid Knok and the bat-like Skar forms but he did! Andy Hibbs explains:
“As a Powermaster with three forms, he is bonded to both the humanoid Knok and the bat-like Skar, who transform into engines to allow him to transform from his vehicle mode – a missile trailer - into two other modes. When Knok becomes his engine, he transforms into an Autobot robot, but with Skar in place, he becomes a Decepticon falcon. Armed with an intercontinental ballistic missilecapable of flattening a mountain and a solid-light blaster, Doubledealer uses both his modes to switch back and forth between factions, working for both and neither. Doubledealer is a backstabber extraordinaire – utterly ruthless and treacherous, he is valued by everyone, but trusted by no-one.”
I really like the dessert camouflage paint app on the figure as the vehicle mode is a perfect canvas for it. Playing into the story of Double Dealer landing in a decommissioned Soviet scrap yard, the vehicle mode has Russian Stars on it, which goes very well with Double Dealer’s persona. Like the Soviets in World War II, they played both sides (signing a non aggression pact with Hitler then joining forces with the allies when Hitler invaded Russia). History is often a great tie in to aspects that customizers choose to add to their works of art. Combing ideas and inspiration from Frenzy.Rumble and Xaviercal, TB Productions has created an amazing Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ultra Optimus Prime. Using the Jetwing Optimus Prime as base-kit and combining with parts from ultimate optimus and other parts, including fakebusker83′s articulated hands, the Leader of the Autobots takes on a tone of settling the score, finally, with the Decepticons. This effect is achieved not only by the hand crafted pin striping and the airbrushing but with the custom interchangeable gun that can be made into a cannon or a blaster, which is one of my favorite pieces to this custom. The paint job on this Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ultra Optimus Prime looks like it was fresh from the new car factory as it has that showroom shine. The pictures speak for themselves and TB Productions talent is on full display with his magnificent ode to the leader of the free bots!
Breast Cancer Awareness Optimus Prime Bumblebee Custom Transformers

It is great to see customizers come together for a great cause! Let’s hear more about thier inspiration for and the story behind the figures:

Not only is it something that is straining on the physical body, but can also is very challenging on an emotional level. Especially for women. Soundblaster Transformers Dark of the Moon Epilogue Series
I am a huge fan of original concepts that are brought to life by talented customizers. In a fashion similar to the Star Wars Expanded Universe series, Jicco is introducing his own series which he is calling the Epilogue Series, which tells the story of the Post Dark of the Moon universe. Kitbashing a Transformers HFTD Ratchet, TFU Blaster, and Classic Prime, Jicco has created this Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Epilogue Soundblaster figure. With companions Buzzsaw and Ravage, Soundblaster take the form of a modified Hummer H2. Armed with various communication tools and signal jammers, Soundblaster & his team is ready to contact other hidden Decepticons! The concept of the continuing the Transformers storyline is a fantastic idea and the figure is a cool concept that is very well executed, painted, and put together.
Masterpiece Optimus Prime Custom Transformers Figure
Completely repainted from head to toe, Xaviercal pays a nice homage to one of the most iconic figures in toy history with his Custom Transformers Masterpiece MP-10 Optimus Prime. Using metallic and base flat paint to achieve a look that this figure deserves, the reds and blues really stand out, which make it look it came right out the G1 cartoon. Not only does this amazing figure have the G1 feel that we all loved from the 80′s, Xaviercal has also painted the trailer to resemble G1 color scheme.
Just looking at the figure in truck and trailer mode brings back that feeling I had as a kid when I saw the Transformers cartoon for the first time and Xaviercal’s Custom Transformers Masterpiece MP-10 Optimus Prime is the one to add to your collection if you want that feeling back in your life. Who knew plastic could be this therapeutic!
Sential Prime Transformers Dark of the Moon Custom Dubz
Dubz has given the main antagonist in the Transformers Dark of the Moon film a much needed movie accurate makeover with his Custom Sentinal Prime figure. The fire engine cherry red paint finish looks amazing and is a huge improvement over the out of the box figure. There are other movie enhancements to the figure and sometimes, the small details really add up. For example, the figure has diamond plating on the rear of the firetruck, chrome rails, and reflective mirrors, which add to the realism. Other details that Dubz added to the figure to make it more accurate include spiked knuckles made from metal, diamond plating on the robot mode, copper piping running from the chest to his right arm, and extensive robot mode detailing painted to match the on-screen character. This is what customizing is about…taking a mediocre figure that is off the shelf and turning it into an amazing work of art that you would be proud to display on your shelf.
JCartwork has outdone themselves with their latest Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ironhide figure. I don’t remember Ironhide having a very large part in the Transformers Dark of the Moon movie but I am happy to see a Leader Class figure, rounding out the collection. It is cool to see Prime’s two right hand men (Bumblebee and Ironhide) in a larger scale. Given Hasbro’s lack luster look and feel, the silver and golds are in the right places, which makes Ironhide’s face really stand out. The LED’s give the figure an awe inspiring look and make the cannon appear that it is spinning at million RPM’s ready to fire off a shot. The figure looks fantastic in GMC truck mode as it actually looks like a vehicle with the chrome stacks and showroom paint job. This Leader Class figure is heads and shoulders above the rest with its killer paint app, styling, LED’s, and, in JCartwork’s words, “freaking huge cannons!!!”
You can feel the engeron and transformation of good to evil with LEK’s Custom Shattered Glass Optimus Prime figure. The design of this figure is really well executed and thought out. The Shattered Glass effect is brought to life with the crackled paint effects on the hood and the cab, giving the figure a feeling of intimidation and power as this benevolent leader is turned into an evil overlord. Some really great additions were made to this figure, including a purple Autobot logo and a really cool gun that makes Optimus Prime look more like Megatron.
Leader Class Megatron Transformers Dark of the Moon Custom
What do you get when you cross a ROTF Optimus Prime, ROTF Megatron, TFTM Megatron, ROTF Human Alliance Sideswipe, numerous Zoid parts, and several McFarlane Cyber unit figures? You get the first Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Class Megatron that stands 12 inches tall and looks like it was right from the movie! This is a great example of art imitating life where the Megatron in the movie was remade with a conglomerate of parts. Due to the nature of this figure, it does not Transform but that is a small price to pay when you have a highly detailed scratch built Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Class Megatron to feast your eyes on. The detail in this figure is something to behold. Zildjian has brought out the rough, ruthless, and raw side of Megatron communicated through this amazing figure. The way the head was crafted gives the figure that battle damaged look from the movie that made Megatron a force to reckon with. If you can’t get something done the way you want it, do it yourself! That was Encline Designs inspiriation for this amazing Custom Transformers Leader Class Dark of the Moon Shockwave figure. This figure appears like a piece of digital art with the sharp edges and fine lines but looks can be deceiving as this is a scratch built figure made from a host of other Transformers figures. The protruding rib cage and leg armor give this figure an ominous 3D feel and the swivel and ball joints make this figure super poseable. Let’s get a feel for how Encline Designs came up with the idea for this amazing figure:
“I have been hoping to see a huge DOTM Shockwave since the first time I saw laid my eyes on that awesome design. Shockwave have always been a favorite of mine. Seeing his movie design was perfect. He captures pure cold, calculating, and logical beast that he should be. I knew the only way to get one is to build it myself. Using a leader class Megatron, Optimus, and a bunch of random parts as a base to start with, I scratch built the body parts using styrene and a torch. Then finished it off with a sculpted head and unique paint job using many shades silvers and steel and then topped of with a slight purple pearl. He glows with great lighting! Standing at 10″ tall, Shockwave is sure to make a unique and intimidating piece to your collection.”

Jetwing Optimus Prime Custom Dark of the Moon Figure
Combining the Takara DMK-01 Optimus Prime model kit with a Takara Dark Of The Moon Jetwing Optimus Prime is Encline Design’s Supreme Jetwing Optimus Prime Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon figure. Portraying Optimus in the final battle scene of the Dark of the Moon movie, this figure is massive! Standing 11″ tall and with a wingspan of 15″, this figure is chockablock with articulation. Although this is a non transforming figure, you would not want to touch this figure! The base is an added bonus and I like the addition of the red and blue colors that artistically tie the figure to display base.
The figure looks outstanding and I have been following Encline Designs for years now and he consistantly creates amazing figures worthy of anyone’s Trasnformers collection so head over to eBay and check out this killer Supreme Jetwing Optimus Prime Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon figure.
There is no doubt that Optimus Prime is one of the most iconic characters of the 1980′s and Scotscream has taken this figure to the dark side with his Custom Transformers Nemesis Prime Movie figure. The color scheme of this figure is very different from the other Nemesis Prime’s I have seen but it works for this figure. The “hand painted nitro stlye flames and chrome parts” give this figure a unique look and the color scheme is carried through the figure in robot mode with purple accents that make each individual part stand out. The head, done in grays and blacks gives Nemesis a mean look, especially with his red beady eyes! In truck mode, you can see the flame paint job carry through the entire figure. I love the way the Nemesis Prime’s red eyes match the red windshield, completing the look of this evil figure!
Usually there is little room for improvement with the Generation 1 Transformers line but Thyvipera has figured out a way to go above and beyond with his Custom G1 Transformers Overlord figure. Standing 17″ tall and featuring tons of articulation, this figure can be posed and played with in several different ways. As the Overlord figure came later in the Transformers line, Thyvipera accurately reproduced the turquoise and purple colors that plagued the figures in the later years of the line. The way the figure was painted makes each part stand out on its own and the colors are much bolder than the original figure. Complete with a new tank barrel and a new jet lasers in the alternate modes, this figure pays a great homage to original figure.
Sentinal Prime Transformers Dark of the Moon Custom
Before I start in on this amazing custom, my apologies for not updating the site in a while as I was recovering from a recent knee surgery. Even though I took a break, it looks like the Dark of the Moon customs are still abundant and doing very well! JCartwork’s Custom Transformers DOTM Sentinal Prime is the exact reason why I started writing about customs. As many of you know, I was not happy with the off the shelf release of this figure due to the paint coloring being off but it looks like JCArtwork has really paid attention to detail on this fact and did an amazing job not only mixing a movie accurate paint job and applying it but the way the plastic shines like metal is worth noting. Optimus Prime Transformers Dark of the Moon Custom
After seeing Transformers Dark of the Moon, I appreciated how the designers made Optimus with more weapons and Frenzy.Rumble has created one of the greatest figures I have seen thus far with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ultimate Optimus Prime. If you want a figure that stays true to the movie, this one is it! Not only does this figure have enough armor on it repel any Decepticon onslaught, Frenzy.Rumble paid attention to detail so many aspects of this figure. By custom making wings and a jet pack, this figure looks like he was pulled right from the movie. The jet pack was designed to appear that the thrusters were about to take off, which is a very cool effect and the Autobot symbols add a nice touch to this great addition.
Optimus also has the ability to change his head from battle to regular mode thanks to alternate head sculpts. To get a look at the amazing detail this figure possesses, check out the image of one of the legs below. You will see weathering, battle damage, and intricate paint works to achieve a robotic and metal effect. Although this figure does not transform into a truck, the robot mode of this figure makes up for the lack of transformation. What is the Transformers universe without Starscream’s sidekicks? Wilestbilame gives us a sneak peak at what that world would look like with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Class Thundercracker in G1 colors. I don’t see many Dark of the Moon G1 customs so this one stood out among the great Transformers customs this week. The G1 color scheme and the striping pays a nice homage to the Thundercracker of the 80′s and gives the figure an updated look with the F-22 Raptor design. Here is the back story and the inspiration for this figure:
“While waiting for dark of the moon to premiere, it was announced that a version of movie starscream with thundercracker colors was in the works, I was excited hoping it would be an updated voyager or even leader version (dare to dream) much to my dismay it was a deluxe version, and while it’s nice and all I always felt that both thundercracker and skywarp where lost potential in the movie universe, they would have been awesome as leader class figures and even more on the big screen to say the least, but I said to myself no more! I also made several modifications which include include fully individuallly fingered articulate hands with movie accurate knuckle claws!(special thanks to fakebuster for providing these!) articulate wrists of 360 degree movement, all of this and still fully transformable! custom movieverse decepticon symbols, about 6 different shades of metal used for his metallic parts for a realistic look, meticulously detailed with different tones of gold and silver all the way up to his eye sockets! I literally searched every little detail where attention needed to be given to create one of the most detailed movie figures ever!! he even has individually detailed wires!! all of this done with the highest quality automotive grade lacquers, enamels and acrylics available.“
The exposed wiring gives the figure a more realistic feel and the articulation in the fingers gives it more of a human personality that comes through when you see the movies. It is great to see teamwork on these customs and Wilestbilame credits Fakebuster for proving movie accurate knuckle claws. It is amazing to see how each customizer chooses to spend their time to achieve Movie greatness and you would not think that adding articulation to fingers makes a big difference but it really does. Continuing with his G1 Tribute line, Malfunction brings us the great Autobot battlestation of the 80′s with his Custom Transformers Generation 1 Metroplex. Chalked full of articulation and the classic G1 color scheme, this retooled and enhanced Japanese reissue is a force to recon with. Here is the back story on this amazing creation:
“A battle base for the autobots that also transformed into an unstoppable robot force, how coo was that. The only transformer strong enough to take on Trypticon. Too bad he lost every time because he couldn’t bend his arm or leg…lol. This custom started off as an authentic Japan version re-issue Metroplex. So what I did was make a custom that didn’t move away from the original but mirrored the original at a larger scale with a lot more modern technology. Pretty much my main goal was to create a g1 figure that was more g1 than the original, 80’s style, with 2011 technology, and better proportions. And with a little bit of chopping, stretching, and bulking this is the custom I came up ULTIMATE METROPLEX.“
I really like the overall color and paint scheme as it gives the appearance of an actual functioning battle station with the carbon scoring and detailing. The over sized gun integrates into the station and provides a cool visual point of interest when the figure is in battle mode. With the figure in robot mode standing 16″ tall, this Custom Transformers Generation 1 Metroplex must be a sight to see in person so head over to eBay to own this great tribute to the G1 Metroplex.
Standing at over 13″ tall, Matt1989cars has created this amazing homage to the combiner of yesteryear with his Custom Transformers Generation 1 Defensor figure. Although the combiners from the 80′s will still be my favorites, they lacked the articulation and scale needed to pull off the amazing battles we saw in the cartoon but thanks to customizers, we get to see these great figures in the proper scale with the cartoon look and feel we have always wanted. Not only has Matt1989 cars made the Defensor combiner as great as it can be, he also created a battle station made from all of the parts that form the combiner!
I hate to admit it but I just got a chance to go out and see Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon so like Optimus Prime is out to hunt the Decepticons, I came back and I am out on the hunt for some amazing customs and Encline Designs Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ironhide figure caught my attention really fast! As always, I am amazed at the movies special effects and the rendering of the robots seemed so life like. Out to bring back some of that movie feel to the figure, Encline Designs has really enhanced this Ironhide figure from head to toe. Here is a rundown of the customizations:
“Added a ton of new body panels, recessed the tires int he chest, scratch built new arm cannons, head on a ball joint, waist on a ball joint, fully articulated hand, add some LEDs and correct placement of certain parts, and BAM!! I present to you one of my favorite movie customs I have done! HE DOES NOT TRANSFORM!”
The LED’s really make the figure come alive and the scratch built canon arm cannons give Ironhide the menacing appearance he had in the movie. Other aspects that make this figure unique are the various ball joints that were added to increase articulation. I think that adding ball joints can give a figure that much needed personality. Although this figure does not transform, Encline Designs Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ironhide figure would make a great addition to your collection!
Mirage was one of the G1 greats of the Transformers line and Wikkid has produced this amazing figure in a much larger scale with his Custom Masterpiece G1 Transformers Mirage figure. Looking at the figure side by side with the original, it is clear that this enhances the classic version with increased articulation and overall style. A mix of figures were used to create this The base components are alternators Prime, Sunstreaker and Skids re-shelled with a 1/20 scale Ligier JS11 Ford F1. The head sculpt looks more like the G1 cartoon and colors are a great match, rounding out a very nice G1 Masterpiece figure.
What customizers do best is see how to make the figures we grew up with bigger and badder and this is what Malfuntion did with his Custom G1 Transformers Custom Ultra Magnus figure. Standing 15″ tall, with better articulation, scale, and proportions, this Ultra Magus is a great homage to the 80′s figure. The colors are spot on and Malfunction set out to create a figure that did not resemble an repaint of Optimus Prime and, to put it in his own words, this figure is a “ZERO parts-former meaning there is no Optimus Prime with a bulky costume on.”

“Neglected by Hasbro, Hasbro/Takara took shortcuts by painting Optimus Prime white and adding an add on kit then called it Ultra Magnus, why?!!! Even today, the masterpiece line releases a white Optimus Prime and calls it Ultra Magnus. When in the animated cartoon did you ever see Ultra Magnus remove his armor and a white Optimus Prime appear? Living up to his Electrifying tagline, Big Hank has successfully blended the G1 and Dark of the Moon styles to achieve this Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Shockwave figure that is a cut above the rest. Adding LED’s in the right places, the light up effects on the eye pay a nice homage to the cartoon version from the 80′s where each word that the character spoke made his eye light up. The paint app on the figure is also well done with respect to the blending of the purple with the metal effects. The way this figure was painted and where the weathered silver was placed gives a nice depth and dimension that the original pre-customized figure lacks. Ironhide Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Class Custom
It only took 3 movies but TF3 has brought us one of the great characters in the line now in Leader Class form and Frenzy.Rumble has turned Good to Great and Epic into Ultimate with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ironhide figure. I must say, the off the shelf version of this figure is not bad but after getting one glimpse of Frenzy.Rumble’s creation, I have to agree with his ‘Ultimate’ designation for this figure. There are certain levels of customizing Frenzy.Rumble can take a figure, iterate the heck out of it, and transform it into a work of art. Take one look at the before and after shot:
At a 10,000 foot view, giving this figure a cohesive style and color was a huge improvement. I was not sure why the original figure has blue but Frenzy.Rumble saw this as an opportunity to give the figure the look it was meant for. At the 1,000 foot level, you will notice two very large scratch built cannons attached to his arms. These cannons bring out the badass in the figure, which boasted the line ‘Feeling lucky, punk” in the first movie. Not only do these cannons look amazing, they also have LEDs for added effect:
At the 100 foot view, you will see paint app accents that give depth to the figure and define the various segments of the body. Sometimes when a figure is made this great, the ability to transform the figure is sacrificed but who would want to turn this figure into a truck when it looks this amazing? The release of the movie is right around the corner and Frenzy.Rumble’s Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Ironhide figure is set to end on June 29th so make sure you mark that on your calendar so you don’t forget to bid on this epic figure!
With the Transformers Dark of the Moon figures out in full force, customizers all around the world are making these figures their own. Ultra Magnus was one of Dark Cave Custom’s favorite characters from the 80′s and it is great to see him remake this iconic character in modern form with his Custom Transformers DOTM Ultra Magnus figure. To capture the essence of Ultra Magnus, Dark Cave created a custom head and weapons that are signature to this great character. Given that this figure originally was a Sentinel Prime, Dark Cave achieved this look by making some great modifications and applying a killer paint app that is unique and re-imagines one of the great figures from the 80′s in Transformers Movie form.
Get Right Robot (GRR) quickly caught my eye with his Custom G1 Cartoon Style Jetfire and he is back again with his latest amazing G1 IDW Custom Transformers Fortress Maximus that stands over 2 feet tall. Inspired by the concept of art of IDW artists Nick Roche and Guido Guidi, the overall design of the figure is a massive achievement in the literal and figurative sense. Employing design skills using sketches and translating the drawings into AutoCAD, which is an engineering software program, Get Right Robot designed the exact look he was going with not only one face but 5 completely different looks. As you can see below, the interchangeable faces (complete with LED), give the figure 5 unique personas. Here is a glimpse in to the process of creating the heads:
Recreating the articulation you would find in a human hand, GRR used 120 cut out plexiglass segments per hand and created his own hinges to build the raw IDW look he was going for. Here are some amazing shots of the amount of of work and examples of how articulated these hands are:
The amount of thought and engineering that went into this figure is beyond what I have seen any customizer do (I am sure there are more out there that do this but I am just not aware). I have really only been left speechless by a handful of customs since I have been writing about them since 2007 and Get Right Robot’s G1 IDW Custom Transformers Fortress Maximus takes the highest honor of leaving a blogger speechless!
Optimus Prime Transformers Dark of the Moon Custom
Transforming the lack luster Transformers Hunt for Decepitcons Leader Class Optimus Prime into this awesome Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Optimus Prime custom really demonstrates Zildjian’s talent and attention to detail. First of all, if you have seen the HFD Prime, it really looks nothing like this great figure that Zildjian has created. The colors are vibrant and was made with custom decals, created by Frenzy.Rumble, to achieve this DOTM look. Here is the rundown of the other features this figure contains:
Fully articulated custom cast hands
DOTM “styled” abdomen that connects magnetically and can be removed for transformation
Screen accurate flames designed by Frenzy_Rumble that are decaled and hand painted on Prime
New rubber single front tires, and rubber double tires in the rear
Extended real chrome smoke stacks
Chrome side view mirrors
Correct blue LED in the head so eyes light up BLUE

He will come with an additional front section of the head that features the face wothout the battle faceplate. This can easily be switched onto the figure’s head by removing a screw from the back of the head.
Prime will also come with a set of custom painted “flaming hot” arm battle hooks that easily plug into the holes in the forearms and held by magnets!
It is great that Zildjian did not wait for a DOTM Leader Class Prime to come out and just customize that version as this is a great example of customizers taking the Transformers line into their own hands and making great things! If you know me by now, I am none too happy with the state of the paint color selection and general look of the figures produced by Hasbro for the Transformers movies so when I saw that the figures were released in my local Walmart store, I said to myself “thank goodness for customizers” because I know they can do better than this. Sabretooth’s Workshop’s Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Sentinal Prime figure is evidence of great things to come with the DOTM line. I know that toy companies like Hasbro have to look after their bottom line and creating figures that match the movies is not possible for them to pull off so I am happy that there are awesome customizers to fill in the gaps. After the tragic earthquakes hit Japan, and the nuclear threat become eminent, Perceptor knew his abilities as a scientist would be needed. He quickly formatted into a nuclear response vehicle, and rolled out with his fellow Autobots. Now, they work to aid those in danger, and work to rebuild. Perceptor was given all the necessary prep and paint work to ensure long lasting and vibrant colors.

Emergency Vehicle Jazz was made from a RTS Jazz. He was given a flat black base coat and then dry brushed steel, silver, and then white. The light bar is from a Generations Red Alert and decals were applied by fellow customizer Jbarb78.
Generations Deluxe Class SIDESWIPE by jbarb78 Customs
Sideswipe was created using a Generations Red Alert figure, painted to resemble a Japanese Imperial Police Car. He was painted using a custom mixed HoK white, and HoK Gloss Black. Standing at almost 20″ tall, Colosal Customs G1 Masterpiece Transformers Devastator combiner is just that…colossal! This Devastator, with its scratch built head, looks mean and nasty and ready to take any Autobot on. The first thing that came to mind when I saw this figure was Revenge of the Fallen meets Generation 1 classics. One aspect that the Revenge of the Fallen movie captured with Devastator was a raw sense of destruction and mayhem and this figure captures that essence while paying homage to classic figure we grew up with. The scratch built wrecking ball and plasma rifle add to the menacing look and feel that Colosal Customs captured so well. This is the first Devastator I have seen in a long time that carries a massive personality in a well engineered figure! Frenzy.Rumble is a customizer with a fountain of ideas and he is never shy about making his concepts come to life, which is evidenced by his Custom Transformers Masterpiece Mid-Warp Skywarp figure. Original ideas are what customizing is all about and this Mid-Warp figure is brilliantly executed! This Mid-Warp figure appears to be changing from translucent to black right before your eyes as the clear plastic blends into the black plastic with a fusion of hot blue in between the pieces. To tell us more about how he achieved this effect, let’s hear from Frenzy.Rumble:
“Mid-Warp Skywarp was an idea I executed well a few months ago, using a deluxe sized, universe crystal clear seeker. With rave reviews and comments, and the urge to make it bigger and make it better; I went all out on a Masterpiece class version. Mid-Warp Sky stands approximately nine inches tall in robot mode (22.9 cm). He was built using a rare and expensive “Ghost of Starscream” Masterpiece figure. Spent countless hours removing the factory paint and details, and sanded then polished the clear plastic to a glass-like finish. I also modified his rear tail fins so that they don’t hang off his hips and are permanently fixed to his lower legs. His display base is also custom painted, and include a very bright LED light which lights up Mid-Warp Skywarp from the ground up, adding extra effect to his teleportation.”
A little over two years ago, I featured MacrossFA-19′s Custom Menasor and I very happy to see that he has back at it. This Custom G1 Transformers Menasor combiner is better than the last one he made and even features the Hasbrotoyshop Special Edition Dragstrip figure. Striving to make this Menasor all he can be, there are a few differences to point out. Deadend and Breakdown have been created with different heads and the connections and joints have been made stronger. This combiner has some very subtle detailing on the arms which makes all of the difference and sets this custom apart from others. For example, the yellow and red accents seem to flow into the figures, which creates some continuity in the figure, which can sometimes get lost when the figures are so large like this. When two minds get together only spectacular things can happen and as a result, Primo’s Customs and Encline Designs joined forces to produce this amazing Custom Transformers G1 Masterpiece Deathsaurus figure. Created from blood, sweat, and a Red Geist and an MP Grimlock, this figure comes to life and looks so much like the art in the comparison picture above. The colors were very well selected and matched to the concept art and the choice of figures could not have been better. Let’s read more about this great figure from the customizers themselves:
“Primo added new arms so he now has articulation at the shoulder, bicep, and double at the elbow. His head is also on a ball joint. He also has new hip, thigh, and knee articulation. His wings also have a ball joint to help add more dynamics to the look. He comes with both breast partners. Also included is a custom sword and gun with mace.”

I did a search on a popular site that sells toys and the first result that was staring me in the face was a hot pink Transformers Dark of the Moon Sentinal Prime figure. The box shows a nice cherry red vehicle yet the toy inside does not match the photo on the box. You would think that the Hasbro would get a clue by the third movie but I guess their market research clearly demonstrated a need for more hot pink Transformers! As the Transformers Dark of the Moon toys are hitting the shelves, check out eBay’s selection of Custom Transformers.
Getting his hands on one of the latest Voyager Class figures from the new Transformers Dark of the Moon movie, Sabretooth’s Workshop brings us this Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Skyhammer figure. With this latest wave of movie figures hitting the stores we will see the array of hideous factory colors that Hasbro decided would look great on the figures so it is up to customizers like Sabretooth to apply a new paint app that most resembles the characters from the movie.
As you can see in the photo above, the factory blue and silver colors are changed to military colors. The paint app is stunning and makes the plastic look like metal with a great matte finish. If Sabretooth’s Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Skyhammer figure is an example of the customs we will see in the near future, I can’t wait for more customizers to get their hands on more DOTM figures!
The minibots were the mainstay of many G1 Transformers collections. My friends and I had many of them and my guess is, looking back, they were much less expensive than the larger figures so parents were more apt to buy them. Beachcomber was one of those minibots that I had as a kid and Xaviercal has created a more update version of this minibot from a DOTM Sandstorm figure with his Custom Transformers Dark of the Moon Beachcomber figure. The basics Sandstorm figure was the perfect base for this custom and with the addition of the G1 style blues and silvers, and a modified head, Xaviercal payed a nice homage to this little minibot. You will also notice that Beachcomber also has a golden hand, which, if you are a fan of the G1 cartoon, is from an episode where Beachcomber found a golden lagoon full of electrum, a naturally-occurring element which would make any Transformer impervious to harm. After dipping his hand into the lagoon, it turned completely gold in color, which he hid from his fellow Autobots,
I am looking forward to DarkCaveCustoms’ latest venture if the next five seekers come out as great as his first Custom Transformers Gundam Style Skywarp figure. Built from a 1/100 HG Gundam 00 Arios figure with a head cast from a Classics/Universe 2.0 Drift, the combination of these two figures plus the classic G1 color scheme makes for a very cool and modern looking Cybertronian type warrior. The orange paint accents on the chest remind me of the canopy of the G1 Skywarp from the 1980′s, bringing together the cutting edge new styling while paying homage to the classics. Skywarp also looks amazing in jet mode:
As you can see in the photo above, the touch of orange on the canopy and the blue accents on the afterburners define the seeker in its alternate mode. As I said before, this is the first of the seeker jets to get this Gundam style treatment so look out for more figure like this Custom Transformers Gundam Style Skywarp figure.
I love it when customizers are not satisfied with the toys that are hitting the shelves because we get to see awesome customs like FrogDNA’s Custom G1 Transformers Classics Hot Rod figure. Disappointed with the head sculpt of the figure, he completely resculpted the figure to resemble the G1 cartoon, along with making other G1 cartoon enhancements. I love the windshield of the figure and the way the blue was painted makes it look like the light and the sky are reflecting off of it. I like the use of gray on the legs, replacing the factory red plastic. The striking colors make each piece of the figure stand out, rounding out its G1 look and feel.
The blending of both the Transformers and the GI Joe universe is captured by comic artists, third party release figures, and customizers. The melding of all three of these concepts is Encline Design’s latest repaint of this Rolling Thunder Optimus Prime figure. It is great to see the fusion of concept art meets action figure meets customizer! Based on the GI Joe Rolling Thunder vehicle that came out in 1988, this is a much smaller scale vehicle than Encline’s first Rolling Thunder Optimus Prime, which was large enough to hold a GI Joe figure in the palm of his hand. The paint apps blend well with the GI Joe universe and I like the blue accents on the guns. As far as the execution of the vehicle concept from Xovergen, I am on the fence about the actual vehicle but Encline did not have a hand in making that part. I love when customizers remake the Minibots from the 80′s because when they do it, they make them in Masterpiece scale and zeroadam12_123 has created this Custom G1 Transformers Cosmos on a much grander scale. Made from an amalgamation of different Transformers parts, this Cosmos is no longer a minibot but retains the G1 color scheme and look and feel of the little classic minibot with the pop up head and funny looking arms. This larger Cosmos figure adds a lot of dimension provides much more definition than the smaller scaled figures. My favorite parts of this figure are the head and the chest plate. Giving Cosmos different color eyes really adds some life to the figure and the Chest plate pays homage to the sticker that was present on the G1 figure from the 80′s. All in all, I think this was a very creative venture and is a great example of how great a larger scale minibot can look from an inspiration of the 80′s.
Standing close to two feet tall, ThyVipera has created one of the coolest figures I have seen in a long time with his Custom Transformers G1 Masterpiece Scorponok figure. First of all, the figure is massive and has earned the title of Masterpiece! The detail on each piece really stands out due to the attention to the paint app as the black washing of the colors give each piece of the figure its own outline. Not only has ThyVipera retained the classic G1 color scheme, he has gone above and beyond by giving the figure a battle station mode (see below). Scorponok is not my favorite of Transformers but the way that ThyVipera combined the classic style with a more useful alternate mode makes this one of my favorite customs I have seen to date.
A lot of time and thought has gone into making this custom the best it can be. Some of the cool features of the battle station mode include it being “heavily armed, with 4 double-barrel cannons, and 4 missile launchers.” Figure, such as Cyclonus and Scourge that are pictured with the custom, can fit into the turret cockpits and both arm a cannon. The pairing of two killer customs in a diorama setting is something you don’t see very often and ThyVipera has pitted the Autobot and Decepticon cassette bots against each other in breathtaking MP scale with his Custom Masterpiece Transformers Soundwave and Blaster figures. In order to create the scale and richness of these 9″ figures, ThyVipera had to make them Actionmasters, which means that they do not transform into their alternate modes, which is fine by me as the robot modes are more impressive and nicer to look at, especially the way the diorama sets them off. These customs retain the G1 look and feel we all grew up with as kids and to see how these figures scale in comparison to the figures from the 80′s, here is a shot of ThyVipera’s Custom MP Soundwave and the G1 Soundwave:

Another very cool aspect to these figures is the diorama, which you don’t see very much. These figures are meant to be displayed and a dio can really add so much more to the presentation of the figures. You can imagine this battle raging on the planet Cybertron as Soundwave and Blaster continue their epic struggle to retain their respective titles as the best outdated 80′s music players! Customizers are always looking to make the toys we grew up with better and Shinobitron has done this his latest Custom Transformers Ratbat figure. I agree with him when he said that the cassettes have not “been given the respects they should have had” until recently. Although this figure does not transform into a cassette, Shinobitron has captured the essence of the G1 Ratbat figure and updated it with a more modern look to fit with the current line of Transformers figures that are on the shelves. The alternate mode turns into a combination shield/gun, an interesting concept for this figure.
While the robot mode has captured the look and feel of the G1 figure, the alternate mode takes a new twist to one of Soundwave’s minions as you can imagine this robot as protector of communication while Soundwave is doing his dirty work. Paying homage to the little Battlechargers that could, Zildjian gives these G1 pull-back motor cars an updated look and feel with his Custom G1 Transformers Runabout and Runamuck figures. Based on the Transformers Generations Drift figure, Zildjian’s Decepticon duo feature custom heads to resemble their G1 counterparts as well as custom cast hands. It is cool when customizers look at the overall figure and make modifications and adjustments when needed. It could have been really easy to overlook an aspect like the hands but it is this attention to detail that sets other customizers apart from each other. You might also notice the red on the eyes and this effect is achieved neither by paint nor Photoshop effects but with LED lights that can switch on and off. If you are familiar with the G1 Runabout and Runamuck figures, you will be very happy that someone took the time to update these classic figures so you can add them to your Transformers collection!
Formula93 has taken Optimus Prime to the dark side with his Custom Transformers Generations RTS Nemesis Prime. The choice and placement of the colors on this figure add so much depth to the figure. The incorporation of the blue accents around the knees, hip joints, mid section, and head define the various pieces of the figure very nicely. In the truck mode, the blue accents are very well hidden and only visible underneath the smoke stacks, which adds a nice transition piece from the cab to the trailer portion of the vehicle. One aspect that has plagued the Optimus Prime toys are the smoke stacks but Formula93 has solved this issue by creating his own custom chrome smoke stacks. The silver accents also make the truck mode realistic and the placement of them is very well thought out. For example, if you look at the gas tank, the silver placed around the tank make it look like the silver metal bands that hold the tanks in place on a real truck. Topping off the truck is a coll Decepticon logo, which gets hidden in robot mode. The paint apps are very smooth on the figure, giving it the appearance of a showroom shine in truck mode. This is a great looking figure so head over to eBay and place a bid on Formula93′s Custom Transformers Generations RTS Nemesis Prime.
The Ravage figure that was produced for the Transformers 2 movie was pretty lackluster and there was not much it could do except turn into a cybertronian jet built for reentry back into the Earth’s atmosphere. Protis82 has put his skills to good use and has created a Custom Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Steeljaw figure in a G1 color scheme. I don’t see many customs made out of the Ravage figure so I thought I would highlight this one as it is unique and it fills a void where the Transformers 2 movie did not provide any robots to counter Ravage on the Autobots side. The head was sculpted to resemble what Protis82 thinks a ROTF Steeljaw to look like if it appeared in the movie. Although this figure suffers from the alternate mode where it is just a reentry bot, at least the alternate mode is much more interesting and looks like the G1 Steeljaw we grew up with.
With 25% of the sale benefiting the Japanese Red Cross Society, Frenzy.Rumble has created this Custom Masterpiece Transformers Acid Storm figure in a charity auction that will help with the relief efforts from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I agree when he said that he “knew he had to go over the top” when creating this figure and he definitely delivered on that promise. If you remember Frenzy.Rumble’s MP Sunstorm, he had created melting effects and he did something very similar with this custom as he has made the figure look like it is being eaten away by acid. The places where I really love the acid effects are on the after burners (as you can see in the photo below) and the two air intakes by the head of the figure. Not only has he created some very cool visual effects on the figure, he applied glow in the dark paint apps, which gives the figure a whole new dimension.
Since the teaser trailer from Transformers 3 was released there has been a lot of speculation as to which robot was within the depth of the space craft that crashed on the Dark Side of the Moon (sorry…had to throw in a Pink Floyd reference there). Some thought it was Vector Prime, Unicron, Sentinal Prime, and even Alpha Trion, which brings me to GetRightRobot’s latest Custom Transformers Alpha Trion figure. Fashioning his figure after the G1 cartoon version, GetRightRobot strove for cartoon accuracy and boy did he nail it. Let’s read more about this great figure from GetRightRobot himself:
“Never before has the more youthful, A3 been represented as a custom figure. A3 has a utilitarian transport truck mode that was common for Autobots of his time. He reflects the sleek robot designs of his era without the added armor and weapons that are found on all Cybertronians after the Great War. This figure has been heavily customized and features a one-of-a-kind, cartoon accurate head. He maintains great articulation and wonderful color accuracy. As with many elders in fiction, Alpha Trion was ancient beyond the memory of most Cybertronians still living. Only he remembers his own origins. This Alpha Trion has the armor, cape and beard that make him such a recognizable hero. He also carries his massive sword, adorned with the symbol of the Quintesson slave race.”
Jbarb78 turned this heroic Autobot to the dark side with his Custom Shattered Glass Rodimus Transformers figure. It is really cool to see alternate versions of the Transformers figure we love. The paint app on the figure is so smooth and the hood detail looks amazing. The head sculpt has the signature Shattered Glass goatee with the insane crazed eyes! Each Shattered Glass Rodimus I come across is unique as each customer chooses to accentuate different aspects of the figure. The silvers and blacks are all in the right place, ranking this figure at the top of my Shattered Glass list.
According to Teletran 1, “Shattered Glass” is the catch-all name for the fictional universe and associated toys begun in conjunction with BotCon 2008. It is a “mirror universe”, where the bad guys are good, the good guys are bad, and everyone has different paint schemes. The story is a Transformers take on the old sci-fi warhorse of an evil alternate universe, a concept previously seen in stories such as Star Trek ‘s Mirror Universe, Superman’s Bizarro World.” The figure looks equally as great in car mode and if you are interested in purchasing this Custom Shattered Glass Rodimus Transformers figure, head over to eBay!
Although Hasbro made a decent Arcee figure for the animated line, albeit hard to find, there was one other figure in the line that had the body shape for a perfect figure and that was Blurr. Echidnaq discovered this and created this Custom Transformers Animated Arcee figure. I always thought Blurr had a feminine body and the combination of an Arcee head and a Blurr body painted in bubble gum pink makes total sense.
When I first saw this custom, the first thing that came to mind was how human this version of Wreck Gar looked. Custom aside, the head sculpt of the figure takes less of a robot look than I have seen in a robot before. The second thing I thought when I saw this custom was it has to be a Steampunk version based on the deco and the paint app but I was wrong! Jin Saotome is dubbing his creation a Custom Transformers Shattered Glass Wreck Gar figure. To be honest, I was attracted to this figure because of the military nature of it with its olive green paint app and army medals that adorn Wreck Gar’s chest. Given the shape and overall appearance of the head sculpt and the slanted diagonal line on what looks to be a helmet, Wreck Gar looks like he is a throw back to the Civil War era. All in all, a very cool military version of the Reveal The Shield Wreck Gar figure.
As Gene Wilder said in the classic movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Facory, “Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.” In this case the 93% perspiration applies as Encline Designs and Primo join forces to create an homage to the comic and G1 version of this massive Transformer with their Custom Transformers G1 Overlord figure. Maybe they celebrated their triumph with some butterscotch ripple but that is not likely. Nonetheless, it is not very often you see to great customizers work together but when they do, great things happen! Let’s read more about how each customizer contributed to the overall design:
“NICK ROCHE has re-introduced the TRANSFORMERS fandom to one of the coolest, most evil, twisted and demented Decepticons/Destrons to grace the pages of a Transformers comic, OVERLORD. I know I personally could NOT wait until each month came and I could run down to the comic shop and pick the next issue up. What is even better, fellow customizer and friend, PRIMO was just as addicted. Once the series ended, we knew what we had to do…..bring Nick’s creation to life! Taking a G1 OVERLORD, and some donor bots, PRIMO did a great job adding articulated shoulders, biceps, elbows, hands, waist, thighs and hips, and knees to this bad boy. He then sent him my way. I hand sculpted the face to capture the essence of what was portrayed on the page. I extended the horns, added a ball joint neck, and some flexible neck cables to fill in everything, and did some other small additions. Then, to top it off, I painted this joint up in my usually fashion, airbrushed with metallic and flats, shading, washes and highlights.”

Demolisher Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Custom
Although not officially one of the Contructicons that combines into Devastator, Demolisher is a lone Decepitcon operating in plain site in the beginning of the Transformers Revenge of the Fallen movie. I would call him an honorary Contructicon and Giant Crafter has given Custom Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Demolisher a more realistic paint app. Typically, construction vehicles have a dirty yellow/orange look to them and this figure captures what a real construction vehicle would look like. The fine detailing and application of this dirty look is very well executed, giving the figure a deeper dimension. Megatron is rearing his ugly head again as the Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon movie looms in the distance. As the toys slowly make their way to toy shelves and fans clamor to be the first to own the new designs, customizers have already worked their magic! By turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, Zildjian brings us his Custom Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon Megatron! From the photos below, you can clearly see that Zildjian’s custom brings the figure more in line with the Movie Version as it will appear on screen. Taking the figure to the next level, he has created a real cloth tarp, bringing more of the realism out in the figure in vehicle mode. It is this attention to detail that makes figure like Zildjian’s a cut above the rest. I am a fan of soft goods mixed with plastic as it adds a different dimension to the figure. The paint apps give Megatron that grimy and weathered look that can only be achieved by talented people like Zildjian.

Doing a straight up repaint of a Deluxe Rodimus figure, Solrac333 tries something new with his Custom Transformers Classics Hot Rod figure. Instead of sticking with the traditional flames on the figure, he wanted to do something different so he made a sunburst effect on the hood of the car. In my opinion, the choice of the colors makes the figure look more masculine and tough as the choice of a darker shade of red, red/orange, and blacks works really well on this figure. It was an interesting choice of color to go with an orange for the upper thighs but I think it blends well with the figure, giving it less of a robotic tone and more of an organic feel. The lack of flames also give the car a more subdued look, which is a nice change from the other Hot Rod figures I have seen.
Taking a Classics Optimus Prim and taking it to the dark side, Dark Cave Customs created this Custom Shattered Glass Ultra Magnus Transformers figure. Dark Cave has literally taken the Shattered Glass concept and applied it to Ultra Magnus. If you look at the overall figure, it looks shattered and beaten down, giving the figure a unique look and adds to the darkness of the theme of the figure. I love the windshield effects and the overall concept of this figure and it looks pretty darn bad ass holding a very large sword.
If Zildjian’s Custom Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon Shockwave figure is a sign of what is to come from the new movie, let the salivating begin! The arithmetic is simple…take a killer line of figures and add it to the hundreds of talented customizers out there and you have a recipe for great things to come. Speaking of which, Zildjian let’s us inside his head on what enhancements he has made to Shockwave:
“In order to make Shockwave better resemble his Generation One character I switched him arms so that his blaster is on his left arm, not his right. This was no easy feat as it required disassembly, removal of pins, and shaving down of certain areas to allow the proper clearance of parts. Shockwave was given all the necessary preparatory work to produce durable, tough finishes. He was sprayed with multiple light coats of plastic adhesion promoter, and then sprayed with a custom mixture of Kustom Kolor plastic adhering paints.”

The metal effects and the G1 color scheme really bring out the details in the figure. Most of the plastic on the original figure is pretty muted but Zildjian has brought out the best in this figure. Given that is a pre-release of the TF3 Shockwave, I can’t wait for the line to be fully released so customizers like Zildjian can get their hands on them! Featuring a cartoon accurate head cast from the talented Frenzy.Rumble, ThyVipera brings us this Masterpiece Action Masters Custom Soundwave figure. Standing 9.5 inches tall, this G1 Soundwave does not transform into the obsolete tape deck from the 1980′s but I find when you have a killer robot mode to display, why in the world would you want to transform it? The legs and arms feature a weathered steel look and a in addition to the killer G1 paint app, the cassette door opens and closes so Laserbeak can rest when he is not performing his spying tasks. Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire! Like the protoform Transformers hurling to earth and burning up on reentry, Frenzy.Rumble has created some killer flame effects for his latest Custom Transformers Masterpiece Sunstorm figure. Imagining how Sunstorm would rocket through the sky, literally on fire, as the metal is pealing and melting off the of robot brings the concept to reality and achieves a look that I have not seen attempted before. It takes a true artist and gobs of talent to pull off the burning, singeing, and fire effects to a plastic figure. Here is a close up of the work applied to Sunstorm’s tail wings:

Frenzy Rumble’s figure is up for sale this week on eBay so head over there and check out his Custom Transformers Masterpiece Sunstorm figure as he has some really cool photoshop effects on some of the pictures where actual flames are shooting out of Sunstorm’s hands. I know Frenzy Rumble is great but if he figured out how to make actual fire shoot out of one of his customs, he will be elevated to a God like level in my book!
