If you grew up in the 80's (like me) and you had a Nintendo Entertainment System (the original), you must have played the game Contra. Released in 1988, this game consumed days of my life as I battled through the world that Konami created and Mint Condition Customs has brought to life the heroes of that classic game with his Custom Mad Dog and Scorpion Contra figures. What inspired these figures? I was wondering the same thing but Mint Condition sheds light on the topic:
"...what if Contra had been made into a live action movie back in the 80's? That was the question I asked myself while tackling this project. Since the original characters were so obviously based on Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone (so much so that the cover to the original game was traced over movie stills from Predator), I decided that none other than the two action stars themselves would play the lead characters, Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer, and Lance "Scorpion" Bean."
These figure are top notch and not only did he do a fantastic job creating highly detailed figures out of 8 bit game characters but he even included the signature weapons that made Contra the killer game it was (and still is). I remember waiting for those weapons to appear as they flew in from the side of screen. To own these one of kind figures, go check out Mint Condition Custom's Mad Dog and Scorpion Contra figures.
Giving a much needed facelift to an Autobot Triple Changer, Xaviercal has applied his talent and gave an IDW and G1 feel to his Custom Transformers Wrecker Sandstorm figure. Giving a metallic look and feel to the figure pays homage to the Generation 1 figure with the coloring and styling. In the original Voyager Class figure, the colors are a bit bright for my tastes which mutes the details in the overall figure but Xaviercal has found a way to bring out the features and make this figure better than the original. The addition of the metallic dark silver accents are a welcome addition to the figure. To view more photos, check out Xaviercal's Custom Transformers Wrecker Sandstorm figure!
If you ever wanted to recreate the pinnacle scene in the Revenge of the Sith movie where Anakin (aka Darth Vader) storms the Jedi Temple with his gaggle of Clones now is your chance! nmptheboss has put together this Custom Lego Star Wars 501st Legion battalion with an awesome set of troopers as well as an AT-RT Walker. Now you can storm your own Jedi Temple...minifig style!
strikealpha247 brings us his Legendary Custom Masterpiece Transformers Ultra Magnus figure. Standing a towering 15" high, this figure boasts massive amounts of articulation as well as a very clean painted look to him. The coloring really brings out the classic nature of the G1 figure and pays a really nice homage to Ultra Magnus from yesteryear. I love hearing about how these figures are made so here is strikealpha247 in his own words:
"Using the Popular Classics Figure figure a new complete overhaul and turn him into the legendary Masterpiece! Ultra Magnus was carefully prepped and then airbrushed with various coats of the highest quality automotive grade paint available to bring out the realism for his main body, a truly awesome one of a kind piece perfect for any transformers Collection! Ultra Magnus is Fully transformable from truck to Robot mode, he comes with his exclusive fire power. He measures about 15 inches tall and very articulated. He has a ball joint head which come off when transforming to truck mode and ball joint hands that come off as well when transforming to truck mode. His power up fire power pack screws on to his back of his neck when in robot mode but can screw off for truck mode."
This is a fully transformable figure, which is fantastic given the size and scale of the entire figure. Typically figure of this size are more of the Action Masters type but not this Legendary Custom Masterpiece Transformers Ultra Magnus figure.
Sometimes making a custom is all about how you (1) put it together and (2) how you accessorize them. In this case, both points apply as Shinobitron creates the look and feel of Batman's nemesis with his Custom DC Universe Movie Masters Joker Dark Knight figure. The image above is one of the most iconic scenes in the Dark Knight movie where you get first get a feel for how ruthless the Joker is. Making a custom extended clip pistol, stack of cash, gas grenade, mask (non-wearable), and duffel bag, Shinobitron pays an homage to villain that will live in infamy. Inspired by one of the figures in his own collection, Chonosmoon creates a killer version of Scourge with his Custom Transformers Fall of Cybertron Nemesis Prime figure. Using the classic black and teal colors from the Robots in Disguise line, he took an FOC Optimus Prime (base) and Air Raid figure (weapon) to combine the parts to create one slick looking figure. The teal that is used in the figure is in all the right places and really mirrors the RID Scourge figure very well. I love learning about what inspired customers to make these great customs so let's hear more from Chonosmoon himself:
This custom is directly inspired by the Takara Tomy RID Scourge in my personal collection. I kept the art style simple so the figure would blend in with non-customized figures. The idea was to completely transform the original base figure (FOC Optimus Prime) into Scourge without making it obvious the figure was customized at all! Keeping the detailing simple was hard for me because I had to often stop myself from adding the meticulous detailing I’m used to. Challenge in the end was very satisfying and I love how the figure looks next to RID Scourge. One of the few things, I like about this one in particular is that he really looks like a mini me of scourge. Most customs I’ve seen of scourge always have the windows red, or and smoke pipes silver. Considering the “cybertronian” style mold used I made my design decisions accordingly.
If you love this figure, there are a few things you can do. First, you can buy this great Custom Transformers Fall of Cybertron Nemesis Prime figure on eBay or visit Chonosmoon's gallery either on his website or over at Procustomizers.com.
Xaviercal's Custom Optimus Prime Speaker Tower is living large! This one is a first for me as we don't see Transformers to this scale but Optimus stands a glorious 3 feet tall plus and instead of transforming into his classic G1 big rig, this leader of the Autobots was turned into a booming speaker system. You can get a great sense of the scale by comparing it to the Transformers movie Optimus in the photo. This thing is HUGE! If your wife/girlfriend or significant other has an issue with you displaying your collection in the home, just tell them that you bought a speaker for the family room and display this Custom Optimus Prime Speaker Tower loud and proud! You can check out more photos and see the LED's in action by heading over to Xaviercal's item page.
The Transformers line has the reputation for coming out with multiple repaints of figure with various names and color schemes, which I think of as a positive thing for customizers. Taking a Transformers Prime Thundertron figure, Dark Cave Customs has turned it into a Custom Beast Hunters Lio Prime figure by adding an Optimus Prime head to it! This amazing repaint brings out the full detail in the figure, which the original color scheme hid very well. The way the face was painted, for example, gives the figure that animal look with striking features such as the jaw line and the eyes. Not only does this figure have a killer color scheme, it boasts weapons too, which you can check out by viewing Dark Cave's Custom Beast Hunters Lio Prime figure! To check out a full list of modifactions and more detailed photos, you can also checkout his image gallery as well.
"You don't know the power of the dark side!!!" I have always thought that Darth Vader kept his armor pretty clean while gallivanting all over the galaxy but Stronox has depicted the dark lord of the Sith as a war torn leader with his Custom Battle Damaged Darth Vader figure. I always thought it would be cool to see Vader's mechanics as his armor was blasted and chipped away. There are very subtle aspects this custom that make it great and add to the realism. For example, on Vader's left leg, you see where the metal meets the flesh where the lower leg connects to the meaty part of his burnt thigh. The figure also comes with a removable helmet, which looks like it has taken a licken too! To see more photos, check out Stronox's Custom Battle Damaged Darth Vader figure!
Shear brilliance are literally the first words that came to my mind when I first saw this Custom Shattered Glass Optimus Prime Transformers Movie Figure by Andy Hibbs. In the Shattered Glass Universe, the good guys take on an evil persona as well as the deco from their respective rivals. Turing this concept on its head and melding it with the Transformers movie characters, Andy Hibbs gives you a version of Optimus Prime as he would have been. Adopting Megatron's decrepit look and feel, Optimus has a similar rusted and used up look that Meg's had in the Dark of the Moon movie and he even incorporated the gas tanker in a very unique way. To see how he did this, head over to eBay and check out his killer Custom Shattered Glass Optimus Prime Transformers Movie Figure and see how Optimus stores his weapon.
Bringing Shiro Yoshida straight from the comics and right into your living room is L/R Customs rendition of the former mutant X-Men character. This Custom Marvel Legends Sunfire figure. One of Sunfire's special powers is the ability to generate superheated plasma and it looks like this figure is doing just that. The fire effects that well up from his right hand give the figure that added depth and the fire effects that were painted on the figure look like the character in the comic. The face mask was well executed as well as the sculpting on the rest of the figure. All in all, an excellent version of Sunfire!
